The Toronto Triathlon Club will be hosting a clinic from 12-2pm to focus specifically on learning the fundamentals of how to flip turn and how to improve your freestyle kick.
Lead by Coach Miranda Tomenson, this clinic will be divided into two parts. First, Miranda will cover all of the basic mechanics for how to safely and effectively execute flip turns for lap swimming. This is an important skill for anyone who is hoping to increase their speed, aerobic endurance and confidence in the pool. Additionally, it helps develop better proprioception in the water, which is a useful skill for open water swimming. Second, Miranda will focus on the freestyle kick. Specifically, how to develop ankle flexibly, proper kicking mechanics and efficiency.
The clinic will include a short talk by Coach Miranda about the advantages of doing flip turns and for kicking efficiently, not just for lap swimming and training, but for open water endurance athletes as well.
Part 1: Flip turns
Once in the pool, Miranda will go over how to safely approach the wall at speed, how to maintain your spatial awareness during the actual flip part of the turn and how to push off underwater once the turn is completed.
Part 2: Kicking
Miranda will lead some dryland flexibility and strength training focused on an improved kick. Once in the pool, participants will learn how to execute a proper freestyle kick using a variety of drills.
Participants must be able to swim 100 metres unassisted and without touching the bottom in a 25m pool.
Needed: appropriate swim wear, goggles and preferably a swim cap and a water bottle, kick boards are recommended, warm clothes for deck. Limit of 18 people.
