    Open Water Swim Sessions

Wednesday July 11th was our clubs second open water swim session of the season at Cherry Beach, and was coached by Kyle Resnick from Absolute Endurance. About 25 members turned up for the 6:30pm start and were briefed by club President Ted Rosen. The water was at least 18 degrees and quite warm for those in full length wetsuits! After a short warmup, we split into smaller groups based on speed and worked on drafting, sighting, rounding buoys, and counting strokes. Swimming in within the group was group was great practice for wave starts in a race.

We will be swimming every Wednesday for the rest of the summer, and the next coached session will be August 8, 2012. If you're a member and want to practice open water swimming while catching up with fellow TTC members come on out!

On Saturday July 14th we had our first team social BBQ at Lake Wilcox after the 8am ride. It was a hot but pleasant day for riding (better than the pouring rain the week before!), and we started getting the food ready for riders who started returning from their rides. Some rode 30km, others 95, but everyone was definitely hungry! Chicken kabobs, burgers, chips, fruit, salad and cold beverages were enjoyed as members introduced each other over triathlon dominated conversations. Another BBQ will definitely be held towards the end of the season so stay tuned!

Dr Cindy Lewis of Absolute Endurance presented an excellent transition clinic this week.  Following a discussion of the typical transition clothing and equipment needed for sprint, Olympic, and Ironman distance races, a transition area was set up outdoors, with a demonstration of the principles discussed.  There was an good interchange of ideas, experience, and questions covering the range of experience of the attendees.  Caroline put the clinic information to practice by achieving the fastest transition time for her age group at the Guelph 1 Sprint Triathlon 3 days after the clinic. Now that’s the kind of results we applaud!

On May 31 2012, Kyle Resnick presented a truly valuable clinic “How to improve your swimming” for members of the Toronto Triathlon Club. Kyle is a swim coach and instructor at Absolute Endurance, who swam on the national team for NYAC for several years and at Canada's Olympic Trials. During the one hour clinic, Kyle demonstrated and explained key features of the swim stroke, including typical areas in need of improvement for most triathletes. Using the endless pool at the Absolute Endurance facility, Kyle explained the benefits of the pool as a training device. The flow of water created by the pool enhances the swimmers awareness of efficiency as the swim stroke is modified and improved. The swim demonstration clearly showed efficient swimming, and there were ample opportunities for questions during the session. Members attending received a complimentary 30 minute swim stroke analysis session generously provided by Kyle and Absolute Endurance. Kyle will also contribute to our open water swim sessions at Cherry Beach this summer. It will be an opportunity not to be missed. Many thanks to Absolute Endurance, a club sponsor, for their ongoing support of the Toronto Triathlon Club.

There was standing room only for our 2012 Newbie Night Clinic at our club sponsor Endurosport.  Attending were a great mix of members and guests with plans to race this season.  Information was provided about training and racing including swim (Maria), bike (Ted), run (Roger) and nutrition (Tara).  A lively question period followed the presentation.  Many of those present took advantage of the additional discounts offered by Endurosport for our club clinics. Following the clinic there was a pub social. Many thanks to Endurosport, the presenters and our attendees for an excellent and informative evening.
